This study aimed at testing a mediating role of personality traits in the relationship between different ways of family punishment and inadequate behavior in school. The sample consisted of 479 male and female students of secondary schools in Serbia. Of the total number of respondents, 63.5% were female and the average age of the subjects was 16.76 years. Students' personality characteristics were operationalized through the dimensions of a shortened version of the Big five plus two questionnaire (VP+2), and methods of family punishment were measured with the Scale of punishment in upbringing. The construct of school indiscipline was operationalized as a single score on the scale of school indiscipline. Results suggest existence of a partial mediating role of certain personality traits between the modes of family punishment and school indiscipline. The role of Negative Valence was important in the relationship between all modes of family punishment, except for the physical, and school indiscipline. Aggressiveness had a substantial effect in the relationship between the verbal and separation types of punishment, on the one hand, and school indiscipline, on the other.
